CAS : 1330-20-7
Formula : C8H10
Grade : Extrapure
Xylene (Sulphur Free) (Rectified) Extrapure is a high-grade aromatic solventprimarily used where sulfur contaminants could “poison” catalysts or interfere with delicate biological staining.
1. Histology and Pathology (Most Common)
In medical labs, this specific grade is the “gold standard” for tissue processing:
  • Clearing Agent: It replaces alcohol in tissue samples after dehydration, making the specimen transparent and ready for paraffin wax infiltration.
  • Deparaffinization: It is used to dissolve paraffin wax from microscope slides before staining.
  • Slide Mounting: Acts as a solvent for mounting media to help adhere coverslips to slides.
2. Analytical Chemistry & Research :
  • Catalytic Reactions: Because it is Sulphur Free, it is used as a solvent for reactions involving noble metal catalysts (like Platinum or Palladium) which are easily deactivated by sulfur.
  • Dry Ice Cooling Baths: It is commonly mixed with dry ice to create a stable -78°C cooling bath for sensitive chemical syntheses.
  • Chromatography: Used as a mobile phase or sample diluent in HPLC and GC where high purity (98-99%+) is required to prevent baseline noise.
3. Industrial & Technical Uses
  • Electronics Cleaning: Used to clean high-precision components and silicon wafers because “Rectified” xylene evaporates completely without leaving oily residues or sulfur films.
  • Specialized Thinning: Employed in the production of high-end varnishes, lacquers, and epoxy resins where color stability is critical (sulfur can cause yellowing over time).
  • Synthesis Precursor: Used in the manufacture of Terephthalic acid, a key component in polyester and PET plastic production.

Xylene (Sulphur Free) (Rectified) Extrapure is a high-purity aromatic hydrocarbon solvent specifically processed to remove contaminants that interfere with sensitive laboratory and industrial applications.
Breakdown of Terminology :
  • Sulphur Free: The product is strictly refined to contain negligible levels of sulfur compounds, such as carbon disulfide and thiophene homologues. This prevents the “poisoning” of catalysts and ensures clarity in analytical results.
  • Rectified: This indicates the xylene has undergone redistillation to isolate a specific boiling range (typically 137–142°C), removing both lower and higher-boiling impurities.
  • Extrapure: A high-quality grade (often 98% to 99%+ purity) suitable for general laboratory work, histological staining, and the manufacture of fine chemicals
