Applications :

1. Plasticizers:
  • Phthalic anhydride is a precursor to phthalate esters, which are widely used as plasticizers. 
  • These plasticizers, especially di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP), are crucial in making polyvinyl chloride (PVC) products flexible and durable. 
  • Examples of PVC products that utilize phthalate plasticizers include films, sheets, flooring, cables, and various molded articles. 
2. Resins:
  • Alkyd resins:
    Phthalic anhydride is a major component in alkyd resins, which are widely used in paints and coatings, providing flexibility, durability, and weather resistance.
  • Unsaturated polyester resins:
    It is also a building block for unsaturated polyester resins, which are used in reinforced plastics, composites, and other applications.
  • Polyester polyols:

    Phthalic anhydride is used in the production of polyester polyols, which are essential components in polyurethane (PU) foams and other PU-based products. 

3. Other Applications:
  • Dye and pigment intermediates:

    Phthalic anhydride is used in the synthesis of various dyes and pigments, contributing to the coloration of textiles, plastics, and other materials. 

  • Insecticides and fungicides:

    It serves as a precursor for certain agricultural chemicals, including some insecticides and fungicides. 

  • Specialty chemicals:

    Phthalic anhydride is used in the production of various other specialty chemicals, including phenolphthalein (an indicator), benzoic acid, and various other organic compounds. 

  • Rubber and polystyrene resins:
    It can be found in certain rubber and polystyrene resins, potentially occurring in other products like cosmetics.

Phthalic anhydride is the organic compound with the formula C6H4(CO)2O. It is the anhydride of phthalic acid. Phthalic anhydride is a principal commercial form of phthalic acid. It was the first anhydride of a dicarboxylic acid to be used commercially. This white solid is an important industrial chemical, especially for the large-scale production of plasticizers for plastics. In 2000, the worldwide production volume was estimated to be about 3 million tonnes per year.
