Ferric Chloride Anhydrous LR 500 gr

SKU : O-5279.0500
CAS : 7705-08-0
Formula : FeCl3
Grade : Laboratory Reagent
Ferric Chloride Anhydrous LR (Laboratory Reagent) grade is a high-purity, water-free form of iron(III) chloride used primarily as a catalystetchant, and coagulant. The “LR” designation indicates it is a general-purpose grade suitable for routine laboratory work, teaching, and industrial processes where ultra-high analytical precision is not required.
Primary Applications :
  • Catalyst in Organic Synthesis: It is a powerful Lewis acid used to catalyze Friedel-Crafts alkylation and acylation reactions, facilitating the formation of carbon-carbon bonds in pharmaceuticals and dyes.
  • Etching Agent: It is the industry standard for etching copper in printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing and photo-engraving.
  • Water & Wastewater Treatment: Acts as a coagulant and flocculant to remove suspended solids, organic matter, and phosphates from water.
  • Industrial Precursor: Used in the production of pigments (like Prussian blue), inks, and as a chlorinating agent for silver and copper ores.
Laboratory & Specialized Uses :
  • Analytical Reagent: Used in colorimetric tests to detect the presence of phenols, proteins, and iron ions.
  • Metallurgy: Employed as a leaching agent in chloride hydrometallurgy and for cleaning metal surfaces.
  • Pharmaceuticals: Acts as a precursor for synthetic iron oxide used in anemia medications.

Iron(III) chloride describes the inorganic compounds with the formula FeCl3(H2O)x. Also called ferric chloride, these compounds are some of the most important and commonplace compounds of iron. They are available both in anhydrous and in hydrated forms, which are both hygroscopic. They feature iron in its +3 oxidation state. The anhydrous derivative is a Lewis acid, while all forms are mild oxidizing agents. It is used as a water cleaner and as an etchant for metals.
The anhydrous compound is a hygroscopic crystalline solid with a melting point of 307.6 °C. The colour depends on the viewing angle: by reflected light, the crystals appear dark green, but by transmitted light, they appear purple-red. Anhydrous iron(III) chloride has the BiI3 structure, with octahedral Fe(III) centres interconnected by two-coordinate chloride ligands.Iron(III) chloride has a relatively low melting point and boils at around 315 °C. The vapor consists of the dimer Fe2Cl6, much like aluminium chloride. This dimer dissociates into the monomeric FeCl3 (with D3h point group molecular symmetry) at higher temperatures, in competition with its reversible decomposition to give iron(II) chloride and chlorine gas.LR (Laboratory Reagent) Grade: Also known as Laboratory Grade, this purity level (typically) is suitable for general laboratory work, educational demonstrations, and preliminary synthesis, though it is less refined than Analytical Reagent (AR) grade.
