Complexometric Titrations: It is used to detect the endpoint when titrating metal ions with chelating agents like EDTA. When the EDTA has “stolen” all the metal ions from the PAN, the solution changes from the color of the complex (red) back to the color of the free indicator (yellow).
Spectrophotometry: Because the metal-PAN complexes have very high molar absorptivity, chemists use them to measure trace amounts of metals in a sample by looking at how much light the colored complex absorbs.
Metal Extraction: It can be used to extract specific metals from aqueous solutions into organic solvents for purification or concentrated analysis.
1-(2-Pyridylazo)-2-naphthol, commonly abbreviated as PAN, is a high-sensitivity organic compound primarily used in analytical chemistry as a metallochromic indicator and a spectrophotometric reagent.
It is renowned for its ability to form intensely colored chelate complexes with a wide variety of transition metal ions.
PAN acts as a tridentate ligand, meaning it “grabs” a metal ion at three different points (the pyridine nitrogen, the azo nitrogen, and the hydroxyl oxygen of the naphthol).
Color Change: In its free state (without a metal), PAN is usually yellow or orange in slightly acidic to neutral solutions. When it binds to a metal ion, it undergoes a dramatic color shift, typically turning deep red, pink, or violet.
