Xylene special (mixture of isomers) AR 2.5 L

SKU : B-3108.2500
CAS : 1330-20-7
Formula : C8H10
Grade : Analytical Reagent
Primary Uses :
  • Histology & Cytology: The “Special” grade is the gold standard for tissue processing and staining. It acts as a superior “clearing agent” to remove alcohol from tissue samples before they are embedded in paraffin wax.
  • Analytical Chemistry: Used as a solvent in Gas Chromatography (GC) and spectrophotometry where the absence of high ethylbenzene levels ensures cleaner baselines and more precise peaks.
  • Microscopy: Used to clean microscope objectives and as a solvent for mounting media when preparing permanent slides.
  • Specialized Synthesis: Acts as a reaction medium for organic chemistry where the presence of ethylbenzene might cause unwanted side reactions or affect the solubility of the final product.
Why “Low Ethylbenzene” Matters :
Ethylbenzene has a slightly different reactivity and boiling point than the xylene isomers. In delicate histological staining (like H&E staining), high ethylbenzene can cause tissue shrinkage or inconsistent “clearing,” leading to poor diagnostic quality under the microscope.

Xylene or Xylol (IUPAC name: dimethylbenzene) are any of three organic compounds with the formula (CH3)2C6H4. They are derived from the substitution of two hydrogen atoms with methyl groups in a benzene ring ; which hydrogens are substituted determines which of three structural isomers results. It is a colorless, flammable, slightly greasy liquid of great industrial value.
The mixture is referred to as both xylene and, more precisely, xylenes. Mixed xylenes refers to a mixture of the xylenes plus ethylbenzene. The four compounds have identical molecular formulas C8H10. Typically the four compounds are produced together by various catalytic reforming and pyrolysis methods.
Xylene Special AR (Mixture of Isomers) is a high-purity laboratory reagent consisting of the three xylene isomers (ortho-, meta-, and para-) with a strictly controlled low level of ethylbenzene (typically < 3%).
Standard “Laboratory Reagent” (LR) xylene often contains up to 20-25% ethylbenzene, but the AR (Analytical Reagent) “Special” grade is refined to minimize this impurity for more accurate chemical analysis and sensitive applications.
