Applications :

1. In Pharmaceuticals:

Emulsifier and Solubilizer:
Span 40 helps create stable emulsions and improve the solubility of drugs, especially those that are poorly soluble in water.
Excipient:
It is an inactive ingredient used in pharmaceutical preparations to enhance the stability, solubility, and processability of the drug.

2. In Cosmetics and Personal Care:

Emulsifier:
Span 40 is used to create oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions in various cosmetic products.
Co-emulsifier:
It works with other emulsifiers like Tween 40 to improve emulsion stability and texture.
Stabilizer:
Span 40 helps to stabilize emulsions, preventing separation of oil and water phases.

It is entry E495 in the E number list of permitted food additives. It is also known under the trade name Span 40.
