Blood clotting inhibitor: Prevents blood from clotting in blood-collection tubes and in blood banks
Food additive: Improves taste and odor, regulates acidity, and emulsifies oils
Medical treatment: Relieves discomfort from urinary-tract infections, treats metabolic acidosis, and reduces acidosis in distal renal tubular acidosis
Antacid: Reduces the risks associated with the aspiration of gastric contents
Osmotic laxative: Used as part of the WHO oral rehydration solution

Trisodium citrate is a chemical compound with the molecular formula Na₃C₆H₅O₇. It is sometimes referred to simply as “sodium citrate”, though sodium citrate can refer to any of the three sodium salts of citric acid. It possesses a saline, mildly tart taste, and is a mild alkali.Trisodium citrate is used in many industries, including food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and detergents. It has buffering, sequestering, and emulsifying properties. It’s also used as an anticoagulant, urine alkalizer, and to prevent kidney stones. Trisodium citrate anhydrous (TSA) and trisodium citrate dihydrate (TSC) differ by the presence or absence of water molecules. TSA is made by removing water from TSC.
