Traditionally, acetaldehyde was mainly used as a precursor to acetic acid. This application has declined because acetic acid is produced more efficiently from methanol by the Monsanto and Cativa processes. Acetaldehyde is an important precursor to pyridine derivatives, pentaerythritol, and crotonaldehyde. Urea and acetaldehyde combine to give a useful resin. Acetic anhydride reacts with acetaldehyde to give ethylidene diacetate, a precursor to vinyl acetate, which is used to produce polyvinyl acetate.

Acetaldehyde (IUPAC systematic name ethanal) is an organic chemical compound with the formula CH3CH=O, sometimes abbreviated as MeCH=O. It is a colorless liquid or gas, boiling near room temperature. It is one of the most important aldehydes, occurring widely in nature and being produced on a large scale in industry. Acetaldehyde occurs naturally in coffee, bread, and ripe fruit, and is produced by plants. It is also produced by the partial oxidation of ethanol by the liver enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase and is a contributing cause of hangover after alcohol consumption. Pathways of exposure include air, water, land, or groundwater, as well as drink and smoke. Consumption of disulfiram inhibits acetaldehyde dehydrogenase, the enzyme responsible for the metabolism of acetaldehyde, thereby causing it to build up in the body.The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has listed acetaldehyde as a Group 1 carcinogen. Acetaldehyde is “one of the most frequently found air toxins with cancer risk greater than one in a million”

TINDAKAN PENCEGAHAN UNTUK PENANGANAN YANG AMAN

a. Saran tentang penanganan yang aman

Bekerja di bawah kap. Jangan menghirup zat/campuran. Hindari pembentukan uap/aerosol.

b. Saran tentang perlindungan terhadap kebakaran dan ledakan

Jauhkan dari api terbuka, permukaan panas, dan sumber penyulutan. Ambil tindakan pencegahan terhadap pelepasan muatan statis.

c. Tindakan kebersihan

Segera ganti pakaian yang terkontaminasi. Gunakan pelindung kulit untuk pencegahan. Cuci tangan dan wajah setelah bekerja dengan bahan tersebut. Untuk tindakan pencegahan, lihat bagian 2.2 dalam SDS.

Simpan wadah dalam keadaan tertutup rapat di tempat yang kering dan berventilasi baik. Jauhkan dari panas dan sumber api. Simpan di tempat terkunci atau di area yang hanya dapat diakses oleh orang yang berkualifikasi atau berwenang.

Suhu penyimpanan yang disarankan 2 – 8 °C
Simpan di bawah gas inert. Tangani dan buka wadah dengan hati-hati. Peka terhadap udara. Dinginkan hingga 0°C sebelum dibuka. Logam
